Remembering a loved one in your Wedding Ceremony

Weddings are a very special celebration with family and close friends. But they can also bring to mind, loved ones who have passed and who will not be present to share that special day. It might be a mother or father, grandparent, sibling or close friend.  Whoever they are, they are someone who has held a special place in your heart and someone who you miss dearly.  They are someone who you know would cherish being part of your day.

As your wedding celebrant I often suggest to couples that if there is someone very close to you who has died, then remember them, not only in your heart but by remembering them by name in your ceremony. It is also nice to have a photo of them sitting on the signing table.  That way, when photos are taken of you signing your marriage documents, their photo is there with you. I recently performed a ceremony where the sister of the groom was remembered and candles were lit by her children in her honour as these words were said:

Those we love remain with us, For love itself lives on.

Cherished memories never fade, Because one loved is gone.

Those we love can never be, More than a thought apart,

For as long as there’s a memory, They live on within our heart.

                    OR another suggestion

Gone yet not forgotten, although we are apart

Your spirit lives within me, forever in my heart.
